at the elementary school." reporting from newtown, connecticut, george stephanopoulos. >>> and good morning from the library at newtown middle school. this is where the 20 children killed at sandy hook elementary would have continued to learn and grow. just down the road from newtown high school where president obama will come tonight to comfort the families, thank the first responders and console the community still in shock. the heartbreak here is magnified by the age of almost all the victims, little children, 6 and 7 years old, all in just the first grade. overnight the shooter's father, peter lanza, released his first public statement. in the shooting were shot as many as 11 times. >> anguished residents of newtown struggle to cope with the loss of so many to evil. connecticut's governor paid tribute to the victims. >> those educators and those innocent little boys and girls, were taken from their families far too soon. >> but it seemed almost nowhere are emotions running stronger than right here as a makeshift memorial that sprung 5u7 hundred yard from the school, where people are coming here to light candles and to remember. reporter: all day long people cake carrying flowers and honoring the 20 children and six adults who died. still under intense investigation. the detectives will analyze everything and put a complete picture together. reporter: officials say they recovered very good evidence that may provide answers about what triggered the horrifying chain of event, when 20-year-old al-adam lanza shot to death his mother nancy in their home and then headed to the elementary school, wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with weapons, high-under powered pistols and a semi automatic rifle. >> i thought we would all die. >>

"tragedy at the elementary school." >>> good evening tonight on this saturday evening from newtown, connecticut, again this evening, a small town in a small northeastern state, but the killing that happened here is breaking hearts from one corner of this vast country to another. here in newtown, 26 christmas trees placed today on the road to the school, one for every victim who died there. in texas today, high schoolers coming together to sing in honored of those lost. in oregon, hundreds gathering for a candlelight vigil. in what has become a national day of grief. but of course that grief felt nowhere more than right here in newtown, where you're looking at makeshift memorial, outside of sandy hook elementary school, people coming together there this evening to try to understand what happened. and try to comfort one another. our abc news team here on the ground covering it all and this evening for the first time, we're learning the names, seeing some of the faces of the young victims, all of them first graders. the medical examiner reporting a short time ago, many of them were sh

are being held around the nation including here in the bay area. we are of course talking about newtown, connecticut. there is a service at saint mary's cathedral this morning. grace cathedral brought together people to show prayers for the families of the connecticut school tragedy. abc 7 news reporter sergio contana has more. >> olivia engel, born july 18th, 2006. >> at a candlelight vigil on the front steps of the elementary school the names of those killed in connecticut were read. >> these children were 5 and 6 years old. we all know 5 and 6-year-olds which is why it was so important to gather on the front steps of an elementary school. >> among those the reverend rhodes. she shared her familiar lace pain. her cousin had two children at sandy hook elementary who managed to escape safely. she hasn't been able to talk to them about what happened. >> shut their phone off but i am getting a post from facebook and i will probably talk to their grandmother in the next couple of days. >> they held their vigils for about an hour which is longer than the organizer suspected. >> i was surpri

at that news conference on abc7 news. >>> that grieving community in newtown came together for a vigil. they shared their stories and the sense of loss. a doctor who helped treat victims is deeply shaken by what he experienced. >> this is the darkest thing i ever walked into by far. i have been through medical training which is -- which has taught me a lot about dealing with stressful situations and this is the darkest thing that i have ever experienced in my life. very traumatic. just horrific. >> and there was a church service there to give the people a chance for spiritual healing. there was a growing memorial, flowers and messages as people reached out to try to support one another. the bay area is grieving and offering condolences to the innocent victims who died at the school. at this morning's mass at saint mary's cathedral, there was a moment of silence and reflection. abc7 news reporter kyra clabber is live to -- clapper is live to give us the details. >> i am pretty sure it is safe to say it is going on across the country as people go to their places of worship. as you mentio
